Established since 1955
Our History
June & Harrold Hesslebarth established the Drayton Valley Bakery in 1955 and operated until 2003. During this time, they laid the foundations for how the bakery operates; to this day, many of its core products have remained the same, from establishing a reputation for fresh baked goods to creating unique recipes that are known to Drayton Valley Bakery and Café. However, there was a limited selection of baked goods, mostly loaves of bread, buns, and coffee.
2003
Jack and Trish Wiersma bought the bakery in 2003. Jack Wiersma is a trained baker with a lifetime of experience and a strong family background in baking. Jack and Trish owned and operated the bakery from 2003 until March of 2021. During this time, they greatly expanded the selection of baked goods. Some classic recipes remained, but a plethora of new and delicious products were created, including, but not limited to, cakes, cookies, eclairs, pies, fritters, and a wider selection of bread and buns. They also created and maintained many relationships with restaurants and oilfield companies. They contributed ideas such as edible images, catering, and a variety of baked treats.
2021
In March of 2021, Erik Bergen and Jackie Young purchased the bakery and are the current owners and operators of the business. Jackie has a passion for baking, accounting, and managing, with many years of experience managing food establishments. Erik has a strong interest in food chemistry and brings many innovative ideas with a very analytical approach to business. Together, Erik and Jackie are modernizing the bakery by implementing new technologies, software, and mathematical approaches such as fine-tuning recipes and cost analysis. Some new products/services they brought to the business are tutoring, fresh smoothies, naan bread, blended coffees, table games, and a few more selections of baked goods. Erik and Jackie respect tradition, keeping some of the classic bread and doughnut recipes and working with staff who have been a part of the bakery for up to 35 years.
Our Future
In the future, Erik and Jackie plan to continually improve the bakery and will eventually compete with leading brands and larger bakery chains while still respecting the traditions and heritage of Drayton Valley and its previous owners. The bakery aims to preserve the rich culture of Drayton Valley and create an inviting atmosphere for all ages, races, and cultures to enjoy.
